AWD and 4WD Rental Cars in Seattle

Mountain passes, ski trips and wet winter roads are why so many Seattle visitors ask for all-wheel drive. 30 of the cars on this site have all-wheel or four-wheel drive, and you book the exact car you see, not “or similar”.

Most capable: 4WD

  • Toyota Land Cruiser 2026: full-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case and a locking center differential, 8.3 inches of ground clearance.
  • Jeep Wrangler 2026: Command-Trac part-time 4WD and a convertible soft top.

Every Tesla Model Y and Model 3 we rent is all-wheel drive: see Tesla Model Y rental in Seattle. Plan for less range in the cold.

AWD still needs chains sometimes

All-wheel drive does not replace chains in Washington. When WSDOT calls “chains required, except all-wheel drive,” an AWD car may drive on without chains only if it carries chains, and at the “all vehicles” stage every car must chain up. Chains are not in our cars by default: add the paid Snow chains Extra on the car’s Turo listing when you book a winter mountain trip. Mount Rainier National Park asks every vehicle to carry chains from November 1 to May 1.

Before a pass drive, read Are chains required on Snoqualmie Pass? and, for a ski day, the Seattle ski trip guide. Check the WSDOT pass report the morning you leave.
