Leavenworth in winter is a Bavarian village glowing with more than half a million lights, a little over two hours from Seattle on a clear day. The drive is the part to plan. The shortest way across the Cascades is US 2 over Stevens Pass, at 4,061 feet, and in December that can mean snow, chain signs and a busy town at the other end. Here is how long it takes, the other way over the mountains, the 2026 Village of Lights dates, where to park once you arrive, and which car makes it easy.
The drive: US 2 over Stevens Pass
From downtown Seattle the US 2 route is about 118 miles. On a clear December Saturday morning, Google predicts a little over two hours. Leave on a Friday afternoon and that same drive is predicted at close to three hours, before any snow. From SeaTac it is about 127 miles by US 2: Google predicts about two hours and twenty minutes on a clear Saturday morning and a little over three hours on a Friday afternoon.
Stevens Pass is the high point, roughly 35 miles before town. WSDOT posts a live report for Stevens Pass US 2 with cameras and the current traction or chain requirement, and says it traditionally reports there from November 1 to April 1. Check it before you leave and again before you head home. If you want to ski on the way, the resort lists Leavenworth as 35 miles and about 45 minutes from the lifts; our Seattle ski trip guide covers Stevens Pass parking.
The other way: I-90 and Blewett Pass
Google's route planner also suggests a second way, and for the December dates we tried it actually listed this one first: I-90 east over Snoqualmie Pass, then US 97 north over Blewett Pass into Leavenworth. It is longer, about 134 miles from downtown, and on a clear Saturday morning Google predicts about the same time as US 2. On a Friday afternoon it predicted the I-90 route faster. It is not a way around the mountains: both Snoqualmie Pass and Blewett Pass have their own WSDOT reports, so check Snoqualmie Pass I-90 and Blewett Pass US 97 as well. If US 2 is restricted or closed, this is the route to look at.
Village of Lights 2026: the dates
Leavenworth's Christmastown festivities run November 27 through December 24, 2026, with a concert series at the Festhalle, live music at the downtown Gazebo, food vendors in Front Street Park and visits with Santa. The lights themselves stay on longer: the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce says they shine from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, Thanksgiving through the end of February, and they are free to enjoy.
There is no single lighting ceremony to race for anymore. The Chamber says it no longer "flips the switch" at a set time on weekends and keeps the lights always on instead. That takes pressure off your arrival time. If your dates are flexible, the Chamber points to January and February for quieter, snow-dusted strolls.
December weekends are another story. The Chamber's own advice: "December is very busy!" On Saturdays, traffic management teams work noon to 8 p.m., weekend parking fills fast, and midweek is easier.
Where to park, and the free shuttle
Front Street is permanently closed to cars, so plan to park and walk. Leavenworth's parking guide lists several City pay-to-park lots near downtown, open 7 a.m. to 3 a.m., with no overnight parking or camping in most of them. Two winter rules to know:
- No street parking overnight in winter. From November 15 to March 15 there is no parking on City streets between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., whatever the weather. Cars left there can be ticketed or towed.
- Some lots change in the holiday season. The Enchantments and Freund lots may be used for local fundraisers from October through December.
The low-stress option is the Willkommen Village Park & Ride behind Safeway on the east end of town. Parking there is free (no overnight), and Link Transit's fare-free Route 32 shuttle runs from there into town and out to Icicle Road, about every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Festival schedules can change on some weekends.
For the 2025 festival the City also set temporary parking restrictions on emergency routes. Before you go, check the City's Christmastown traffic page for any restrictions this season.
Which car for Leavenworth in winter
Pick AWD or 4WD for this trip, and plan on chains. WSDOT posts traction and chain requirements for Stevens Pass, and for Snoqualmie and Blewett Passes if you take I-90. Here is what each sign means for a passenger car:
- "Traction tires advised": approved traction tires are recommended, not required.
- "Traction tires required": every car needs approved traction tires. A car without them chains up, AWD or not.
- "Tire chains required": front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive cars chain up. Washington lets an AWD or 4WD car continue without chaining up only if all its wheels are engaged, it has approved traction tires, and tire chains are carried inside the car.
- "Chains required on all vehicles": every car chains up, AWD and 4WD included.
Our guide Are chains required on Snoqualmie Pass? explains each stage in more detail, and WSDOT's Tires & chains page is the official word, including what counts as an approved traction tire.
Chains are a paid Extra, not part of the car. Our cars do not come with chains. You add them on Turo as the "Snow chains" Extra when you book. When we checked in October 2026, every car suggested below offered it. Extras can change, so look for Snow chains in the Extras section of the listing before you book. If the car you want does not offer it, bring your own chains that fit its tires. WSDOT notes that Washington's chain laws still apply even when a carmaker discourages chains, and that the Washington State Patrol lists approved chain alternatives.
Tires decide what you can do at the first two chain signs. Want to know what tires are on a car before a snow trip? Text (206) 941-0717 or email info@tenetmotors.com before you book.
Good fits from the fleet:
- Couples or a small family: Subaru Outback 2022, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2026, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid 2026 or Mazda CX-50 Hybrid 2025, all AWD with five seats. The three hybrids show 38 to 41 mpg on our fleet page, handy on a 236-mile round trip.
- Six or seven people: Toyota Grand Highlander 2026, Kia Telluride Hybrid 2027 or the AWD Toyota Sienna 2025 minivan, each with seven seats.
- Something special: the Toyota Land Cruiser 2026 (4WD, five seats), the Rivian R1S 2025 (electric, AWD, seven seats) or the Tesla Model S 2026 (electric, AWD, five seats).
Driving electric? Leavenworth's parking guide lists eight EV charging stalls at the City's Glacier lot and two charging stations at the Willkommen Park & Ride. Cold weather costs range, so arrive with a buffer and charge in town before the climb home. The U.S. Department of Energy says EV range can drop by about 41% at 20°F, with about two-thirds of the extra energy going to heat the cabin. Read the car's Turo listing for how charging works on your trip, and message us if anything is unclear.
Bringing the dog? Check the Extras on the car's Turo listing, or message us before you book.
